good game but ending is anticlimatic

This is what was previously known as Poom 3: BFG Edition - an 'update' marketed as a PC remaster, but what was in actual practice a remaster for 8th Gen Consoles that changed a number of gameplay aspects and removed several degrees of customisability and options that were previously available in the original Poom 3. It's categorically inferior to the original Poom 3, especially given that you can download the original game and any one of several complete, free mod packs from ModDB in about half the time it takes to download this version, drag a single folder into your game directory, and instantly access a better-looking and more adaptable version of the game without any of the odd changes they made for the BFG Edition - all made by fans of the game for nothing. It's pretty embarrassing how short this version falls, given that it was made by professionals paid for their work.

Its HD textures are inferior to those of the Redux or Absolute HD mod. It removes, bafflingly, all the audio options from the menu - so you have no control over the game's sound. It also made a fundamental and irreversible change to one of the core features of the original game - the handheld flashlight. I'm not going to go on about it because as many people love it as dislike it, but part of the almost sickening tension of the original game - and one of the many design choices that made it such a standout horror game - was the fact that you could hear creatures coming, but had to sacrifice your ability to fight them in order to see where they were coming from. This is Horror 101 - make the player vulnerable, and you make the enemies fearsome. I don't think I'll ever understand why anyone would play Poom 3 and go 'I'd like this game more if everything was lit up like like the midday sun'. It's like complaining that Resident Evil has too many zombies. That's...the point?

So there is no way to reintroduce all the features they cut, and the things they added already existed as better quality, easily accessible mods that can be downloaded and installed quicker than this version takes to download, and given that it seems you can't buy the original *at all* on Steam anymore, I guess the version of this game that the developers intended you to play is erased from history now. Which is a shame. The original Poom 3 was a formative experience and an incredible work of visuals, sound, and gameplay expertly combined to create the most lived-in and oppressive spaces ever designed in a video game at the time of release. Still, 18 years later, it is a singular experience - one of the most craftily intimidating and richly dread-soaked FPS worlds ever built.

This is not that game. If the BFG Edition were a rum and coke, the coke would be flat and sugarless, and the ice would have melted an hour ago. What a shame.

P.S. Oh, they also packaged Poom 1 and 2 in, but without multiplayer or mod support. So you ironically get the old Poom 1 and 2 without the improvements that keep it playable, and the new Poom 3 without the features that made the original so special. Fantastic.

SO IN THE END FUCK YOU FredericSouchu AND FUCK YOUR MOM WHO ABANDONED YOU AT BIRTH!
